Assumed Name

A Certificate of Assumed Name must be filed with the Register of Deeds in the county or counties where businesses plan to operate. Corporations or Limited Liability Companies must register their business names with the N.C. Secretary of State, Corporations Division.

The Assumed Name document should be prepared by an attorney or the owner of the business. The Register of Deeds office does not furnish forms of this document, nor can we help in preparing them. You may obtain forms by going to the N.C. Commerce Web Site .
