General Information

An Assumed Business Name Certificate is a document that puts on record a business name of an individual, partnership, or corporation other than their own name. Doing business under an assumed name is regulated in North Carolina by NC General Statutes.

Name Search

Before recording an Assumed Business Name Certificate a name search should be performed at the county and state levels to determine if the name is available. Brunswick County assumed name recordings are searchable here; the North Carolina Secretary of State's assumed name records are searchable here .

Fees

The recording fee for an Assumed Business Name Certificate is $26.00 for the first 15 pages and $4.00 for each additional page. However, N.C. Recording Standards must be met or an additional $25.00 will be required. Mail the fee (payable to BCROD), a self-addressed stamped envelope, and the completed form to: P.O. Box 87, Bolivia, NC 28422. Recording can also be done in person (payment by cash or money order only) between the hours of 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, except holidays.
